Obituary* | SAM HAIRSTON IS VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK - Large Landowner Passes Suddenly at Home Oak Hill - Samuel Hairston, probably one of the largest landowners in this section of Virginia, died at his home at Oak Hill, in Pittsylvania county, at seven o'clock on Sunday morning following a heart attack. It was his second seizure for on December 9th he became seriously ill but recovered from the heart attack thought recently had complained of not felling well. Mr. Hairston who was 67 years of age, rose on Sunday morning for breakfast as usual but almost immediately became ill and went back to bed. His condition rapidly became worse and in fifteen minutes he was dead. Mr. Hairston was born at Walnut Cove, N. C., a son of George Hairston but he took over the ancestral estate at Oak Hill in 1881 and since that time he has managed the far flung plantation being known as a highly successfull tobacco grower. He was active in state and county affairs being a member of the State Board of Agriculture at the time of his death as well as being a member of the Pittsylvania county electoral board. He was a senior warden of St. Lukes Episcopal church at Spray, N. C.. Surviving him is his widow and the following seven children J. J. Hairston of Spray, N.C; Samuel Hairston Jr. of Oak Hill, Miss May Hairston of Oak Hill, Miss Ruth T. Hairston of Oak Hill and George Hairston and Rufus Hairston now attending Duke University. The funeral will be conducted at the home tomorrow morning at ten o'clock.
