Biography*Sketch of Dr. Andrew Barkley, Early Lowndes County Presbyterian Preacher.
Dr. Barkley was a descendant of a fine old Kentucky family. His mother was Margaret Hanna, kinswoman of Mark Hanna, statesman prominent during the McKinley administration. He came to this section from Tennessee in response to a call from the Crawford and Bethel churches. After being here awhile -- perhaps a year or two, he married Miss Sarah Hairston, member of the influential pioneer family of that name. In appearance, Dr. Barkley was often likened to the partisan of old because of a very bald head and a long flowing beard. Conspicuous characteristics were -- a most courtly and affable manner always, but especially in his own home, a keen sense of humor and love of a good joke, even at his own expense, as is verified by this incident which Mrs. Bridgeforth, his niece, told me he frequently related with evident enjoyment. Upon an occasion when he was being entertained by friends, the young son of the hostess remained in the room the entire morning with his eyes steadily on the visitor spell-bound as it were, as it neared 12 o'clock, his mother called him to get ready for dinner -- the little fellow arose reluctantly and with his gase still on the bald head and bewhiskered face said very audibly as he left the room, " I sure wish I was fixed up like that preacher. He hasn't got any hair to comb or any face to wash." Mrs. Bridgeforth said that was the top notch story of his social reminiscences. p.6.5
