| Newspaper* | SHELBY - CARROLL. -- A pretty wedding was quietly solemized at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. Hester B. Shelby, 1088 Vollentine Avenue, at 7:30 o'clock last evening, when Miss Martha Watkins Shelby became the bride of Mr. Gentry Calvin Carroll, the Rev. Walter M. White of the Linden Avenue Church officiating.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, Mr. Louis Shelby, was gowned in white net and carried a bouquet of white sweet peas and valley lillies. Her ornament was a brooch of cameo and pearls, gifts from her mother, and having been amoung her mother's wedding gifts. She was attended by her sister, Miss Miriam Shelby, who wore a gown of white Georgette crepe embroidered in pink and blue beads and carried a bouquet of pink sweet peas. The groom's best man was Mr. Virgil Buzzard. The wedding march was played by Miss Erie Deen at the piano and Miss Katherine Heard on the violin, preceded by vocal selections rendered by Dr. and Mrs. E. E. Carr and Miss Nada Bicknell.
Mrs. Carroll's going away gown was gray cloth with a hat of gray and rose. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll will be at home after June 15 at Kendale, on Summer Avenue, until the completion of their new home on Felix Avenue. -- The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee, Sunday, June 3, 1917, page 37. |

| Obituary* | GENTRY CALVIN CARROLL - Paper Company Credit Chief Dies at Kennedy Hospital - Gentry Calvin Carroll of 1835 Felix, credit manager of Southland Paper Co., died at 3:45 yesterday afternoon at Kennedy Veterans Hospital. He was 62. Mr. Carroll was born in Kenton, Tenn., and came to Memphis as a young man. He was associated with Tayloe Paper Co. before joining the Southland firm about five years ago. Ill about two-and-a-half months he had been a patient at the hospital since April 30. He was an Army veteran of World War I, a member of Lindenwood Avenue Christian Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Martha Shelby Carroll; three daughters, Mrs. Frank Preston, Miss Martha Virginia Carroll and Miss Miriam Shelby Carroll of Memphis; two brother, Chester Carroll and Roy Carroll of Kenton, and two sisters, Mrs. E.
