Obituary* | Martha S. Carroll - Services for Mrs. Martha Shelby Carroll, descendant of Isaac Shelby, for whom Shelby County was named, will be at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Memphis Funeral Home on Union, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Carroll, 83, the widow of Gentry C. Carroll, died yesterday at Baptist Hospital after a brief illness. She had been a resident at Rosewood Nursing Center for several years and was a life-long Memphis resident. A teacher, Mrs. Carroll resumed her career after her daughters were in college. She taught fourth grade at the old Pentecost-Garrison School, now Presbyterian Day School. She was a long-time member of Lindenwood Christian Church and was active in helping the "shut-ins" of her church. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Coe Stone and Mrs. I. W. "Dan" McGuire, both of Memphis, and Mrs. Edward A. Hightower Jr. of Atlanta, Ga; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. - The Memphis Press-Scimitar, Thursday, February 28, 1980. |
