Military*He entered the Army on 10 October 1939. He completed flight training in 1943 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. He was promoted a First Lieutenant in October 1943 and later flew a P-38 Lighting reconnaissance plane over Europe in World War II. He was shot down over France in June 1944 and was a prisoner of war for 11 months. Richard Murray Hairston retired as a Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Air Force on 30 June 1960.
