Obituary*"Lowndes' Last Vet of Confederacy is Buried Upstate - Columbia - May 11 -- Services for Capt. Jack Ledbetter, the last remaining Confederate veteran in Lowndes County, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the family residence in Crawford, with the Rev. R. E. Shelton, pastor of the Crawford Methodist Church in charge. Captain Ledbetter, who would have observed his 97th birthday in two weeks, died at his home at 5:30 a.m. Saturday after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Lowndes County, he had served as a member of the board of supervisors for 36 years and as superintendent of the Crawford Methodist Church Sunday School for more than 30 years. Born John McGee Ledbetter on his father's plantation near Crawford on May 22, 1846, Captain Ledbetter was a mere lad at the outbreak of the Civil War. He joined the Confederate army at the beginning of the second year of the war and served his native Southland until the conflict was over. He was married to Miss Margaret Albertine Randle on Oct. 20, 1874. Mrs. Ledbetter died in February, 1936. Of their 10 children, one daughter and three sons survive. They are Miss Maggie Lou Ledbetter of Crawford, who resided with her father until his death; W. D. Ledbetter of Columbus, and John M. Ledbetter of Shuqulak. Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Captain Ledbetter had one brother and seven sisters, several of whom lived to be more than 90 years of age." -- Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Mississippi, Wednesday, May 12, 1943, page 5.
