Obituary*John Peter Hairston Jr. was born on October 23,1935 in Columbus, Mississippi. He passed peacefully on June 16, 2024, at the age of 88.
Pete graduated in 1957 from Mississippi State University with a degree in Business and Finance. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1962, Pete served his country as a Sergeant in the US Army. He began his career in the wood industry working with Belwood in the cabinet and door manufacturing industry in Ackerman, Mississippi. He married the love of his life, Nancy, in 1966, married for 56 years. He moved his family to Fort Worth Texas and worked with Overhead Door before moving to Mt. Pleasant, Texas and opening Kwik Way Corporation.
Pete was very active in the community, serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce and participated on the City Planning and Zoning Commission for several years. Pete was a proud member of Tennison Memorial United Methodist Church and the Janet Martin Sunday School Class. He enjoyed spending time doing volunteer work with his Tennison family.
Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Bennett Hairston, his mother Mary Alice Hairston Gibson, his father John Peter Hairston Sr, his brother James Lamar Hairston. He is survived by his children Holly Steen and spouse Mark Steen, son Will Hairston, his grandson's Ben and Adam Steen, his sister and brother-in-law Nanette and Bill Williams, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Bill Edwards, sister-in-law Francis Hairston, brother and sister-in-law Watt and Kathy Hairston and sister-in-law Martha Bennett Power. Numerous nieces and nephews which he adored.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday July 27, 2024, at Tennison Memorial United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Tennison UMC or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
