He was the son of Archibald STUART and Elizabeth Letcher PANNILL.

NOTE*NOTE: J.E.B. Stuart's great-grandmother was Elizabeth Perkins who married Capt. William Letcher and they had a daughter Bethenia Letcher. After Capt. Letcher's death, Elizabeth married George Stovall Hairston and they raised the one year old Bethenia. Bethania Letcher married David Panill and their daughter Elizabeth L. Pannill married Archibald Stuart, the parents of J.E.B. Stuart. That is why J.E.B. Stuart and the Hairstons referred to each other as cousins.

J.E.B. Stuart attended the Hairston school at the Oakhill Plantation. J.E.B Stuart's sister, Columbia LaFayette Stuart, married Peter Wilson Hairston in 1849 and lived at the Cooleemee Plantation in Davie County, North Carolina. J.E.B. Stuart and Elizabeth "Bettie" Hairston courted prior his departure to attend West Point, he called her "Cousin Bettie".
